Why am I seeing a 400 Bad Request - INVALID_DATA error when using Easy MTD?

The reason you are seeing a 400 Bad Request - INVALID_DATA error is for one of the following reasons:

  • The VAT Registration Number for the business specified in Easy MTD is incorrect. Check it is correct by clicking the applicable Amend link on the Businesses page in Easy MTD and clicking the Lookup button in the Amend Business window.
  • Authorisation/connection with HMRC has expired or has become invalid. Work your way through the process of connecting Easy MTD with HMRC by clicking the applicable Connect link on the Businesses page.
  • The Year To date shown in the VAT Information panel of Easy MTD is invalid. Click the Reset button to the right of the date in the VAT Information panel to reset the date to its default.
  • The business may not be VAT registered or not signed up for Making Tax Digital in your HMRC online account. Check whether the business is registered and signed up in your HMRC online account or by contacting HMRC.
