The reasons why you are unable to connect Easy MTD with HMRC are listed below:
- You did not specify the correct HMRC account sign-in credentials for the business or taxpayer you have specified in Easy MTD - e.g. you specified personal credentials or credentials for another business or taxpayer. Often, credentials previously used to sign in to a HMRC account are saved by your browser so ensure they match those of the business or taxpayer you are performing the connection for.
- The wrong VAT number or National Insurance number is specified in Easy MTD.
- Your HMRC account does not have VAT or Income Tax added to it. You must sign in to your HMRC account, go to "Manage Account", click the "Get online access to a tax, duty or scheme" link and follow the prompts to add the applicable tax to your account.
- You have pasted the wrong code into Easy MTD. Do NOT paste the code sent to your phone by HMRC or the code shown in your authenticator app. Paste the 32 character code shown on the HMRC web page at the end of the connection process.
- If you are an agent, you did not specify your agent services account credentials.
- You have previously signed up and used GOV.UK One Login, and did not choose that option when asked to sign in to HMRC.
- The HMRC system is unavailable due to maintenance or a problem.
- There is an issue with your HMRC account that may have been caused by the recent introduction of GOV.UK One Login, or something else caused by HMRC.
If you continue to experience a problem connecting Easy MTD with HMRC, please contact HMRC (use the link below) so they can check whether your HMRC account is setup correctly or to advise on whether you should use the Government Gateway or GOV.UK One Login during the connection process.
